نویسنده
چکیده
Using a single trapped barium ion we have developed an rf spectroscopy technique to measure the ratio of the off-resonant vector ac Stark effect (or light shift) in the 6S1/2 and 5D3/2 states to 0.1% precision. We find R ≡ ∆S/∆D = −11.494(13) at 514.531 nm where ∆S,D are the light shifts of the m = ±1/2 splittings due to circularly polarized light. Comparison of this result with an ab initio calculation of R would yield a new test of atomic theory. By appropriately choosing an off-resonant light shift wavelength one can emphasize the contribution of one or a few dipole matrix elements and precisely determine their values.

We present a lifetime measurements of the 6s level of rubidium. We use a time-correlated singlephoton counting technique on two different samples of rubidium atoms. A vapor cell with variable rubidium density and a sample of atoms confined and cooled in a magneto-optical trap. The 5P1/2 level serves as the resonant intermediate step for the two step excitation to the 6s level. We detect the dec...

Cold inelastic collisions between confined cesium (Cs) atoms and Cs2 molecules are investigated inside a CO2 laser dipole trap. Inelastic atom-molecule collisions can be observed and measured with a rate coefficient of ∼ 2.5× 10 cm s, mainly independent of the molecular ro-vibrational state populated. Lifetimes of purely atomic and molecular samples are essentially limited by rest gas collision...

We have performed calculations of the size of the frequency shift induced by a static electric field on the clock transition frequencies of the hyperfine splitting in Yb, Rb, Cs, Ba, and Hg. The calculations are used to find the frequency shifts due to blackbody radiation which are needed for accurate frequency measurements and improvements of the limits on variation of the fine structure const...

The pixel detector is the innermost tracking device of the CMS experiment at the LHC. It is built from two independent sub devices, the pixel barrel and the end disks. The barrel consists of three concentric layers around the beam pipe with mean radii of 4.4, 7.3 and 10.2 cm. There are two end disks on each side of the interaction point at ±34.5 cm and ±46.5 cm This article gives an overview of...
